Properties and Uses of Aluminum Sulfate

    Aluminum sulfate can be produced by reacting bauxite and sulfuric acid under pressure, or by decomposing alumina, kaolin and alumina-containing silica raw materials with sulfuric acid. Aluminum sulfate can also be prepared by putting aluminum hydroxide (Al(OH)3) into sulfuric acid (H2SO4). Aluminum sulfate is white glossy crystals, granules or powder, sweet in taste and stable in air.

        It loses part of the crystallization water when its temperature reaches 86.5℃, and loses all the crystallization water at 250℃. When heated, it expands violently and turns into spongy substance, when it is heated to 770℃, it starts to decompose into aluminum oxide, sulfur trioxide, sulfur dioxide and water vapor. Soluble in water, acid and alkali, insoluble in ethanol. Aqueous solution is acidic. Hydrolysis generates aluminum hydroxide. Aqueous solution boiling for a long time can generate basic aluminum sulfate. The industrial product is off-white flake, granule or lump, with light green color because of low iron salt, and the surface is yellowish because of the oxidation of low iron salt. The crude product is gray-white fine crystal structure porous. Non-toxic, dust can irritate the eyes.
